Lunar Eclipse

Anzu had discovered too late that being around the Pharaoh had been like staring fully into the sun; painful and beautiful all at once. When she looked away she found little dark spots on the world that she wouldn't have seen otherwise.

It was the dirty looks that the upperclassmen bullies shot her way when she stood up for the new transfer student, the ones that promised they'd be back when she wasn't around to scold them. It was an afterimage, since they thankfully no longer went after Yuugi (they'd learned that lesson) but other students were still fair game, and Anzu knew there'd be no more Penalty Games haunting their steps until they smartened up. But it was easy to see the small form with tricolour hair being batted too easily around the hallway, instead of what was actually in front of her.

It was the sidelong glance Yuugi would give her when he dueled, like he was watching for her reaction before a particularly important card draw. Her breath would catch and she'd remind herself that anyone could accidentally be a little heavier on the eyeliner than they'd intended, and that the autumn leaves on the trees could reflect any jewel toned eye colour into crimson.

It was the morning she woke up and had that moment of vertigo, realizing that the most interesting thing she'd do today was hit up the new music store after school. Saving the world and the hearts and lives of her friends shouldn't be part of anyone's daily routine, and yet Anzu couldn't banish that tiny flicker of despair at knowing she was once again normal and it wasn't enough.

It was the astronomy class where they studied lunar eclipses, and Anzu realized that only when the moon has put itself between the heart of the sun and the earth could one safely look at the two without being blinded. She realized she'd seen one recently, the Ceremonial Duel (though they didn't call it that, too formalized and too much synonymous with farewell) and only by using Yuugi as a lens had they been able to see the real Nameless Pharaoh: Atemu, no longer dimming his brightness for fear of blinding them.

She'd disregarded caution and stared into the sun, and lived, and when it was over there was darkness.

For so long, Yuugi had been her spot of sunshine in an otherwise unremarkable life, but where Atemu's light had shone brilliance to the point where it had erased everything else, Yuugi's was gentle and encompassing. When Anzu looked at Yuugi, she didn't see the dark spots on the world anymore.

She preferred it that way.
