Summary: C.C. knows that fear is a necessity.

In all her life, C.C. had never known humans to be without fear. They all dealt with it in different ways; some were brash, some were cowed by it, the odd few even reveled in it. Fear was a necessity, even moreso than love or honour or justice. Empires rose and fell, some without order and some without skill but there had never been a civilization where fear was unknown. The witch had deduced that fear was part of the human heart, ingrained deeper than free will. (When she thought about it, free will was a pretty loose concept and thus the Geass worked on everyone.)

So when C.C. watched the fighters of the Black Knights charge into battle with banners aloft and Knightmare guns blazing, and heard Lelouch's silky laughter over her headset when he commented that their Japanese patriotism made them perfect pawns, she chose not to correct him. He was young still, without the worldview that she possessed, and she didn't begrudge him that.

If she'd tried to make him understand, she would've had to force him to come to grips with his own fears, and he would've been so much less effectual that way. Lelouch believed that -- like his royal status, his student occupation, his very mortal existence -- he was above everything.

Including fear.

"Look, C.C.," he said, guiding her attention to the last remnants of a decimated Britannian squadron being cut down by the Knights as they tried to retreat. "Do you think all of Britannia will know that fear soon enough? Do you think it the Emperor will know it?"

"I'm sure," the witch answered, and hoped that day would come before Lelouch's own fear destroyed the world.
